Premiere of New Guilfoyle Work

A new piece for electric guitar and orchestra by the Irish composer Ronan Guilfoyle will be performed for the first time in full on Friday, 20 January, at the National Concert Hall, Dublin.

Hands, written for the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra and soloist Rick Peckham, receives its official premiere at the orchestra’s Friday night concert, with parts of it having been performed at a lunchtime Horizons concert earlier in the week. Guilfoyle (b. 1958), an acoustic bass player as well as a composer for both classical and jazz ensembles, often combines improvised and written material.

While writing the piece, Guilfoyle kept a video diary of progress — some of the composition took place during a residency at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre in County Monaghan. The first of these, offering an insight into the earliest part of the composition process, is included below.
