Seán Ó Ríada Composition Competition

Established three years ago, the Seán Ó Ríada Composition Competition, awarded for a composition of choral music, will once again form part of the Cork Choral Festival in 2013. The festival has received a total of eighty-nine compositions for the competition to date.

The winning composition will be selected by a panel, comprising of composers and choral experts, and will become a featured work at the a seminar for new choral music during the festival. The work will receive its premiere performance during the Festival at a concert given by the National Chamber Choir of Ireland, conducted by Paul Hillier, on Friday, 3 May.

Submitted pieces must be original works, written for SATB a capella choir (with an option of small divisi) and can be up to five minutes in duration. There is no age restriction for the competition. The deadline for applications is Friday, 14 December 2012. For the complete terms see here.

A Prize of €750, donated by the Ó Riada Family, will be awarded to the winning composer, as well as a trophy. The winner of last year’s award was Frank Corcoran.
