Sometimes a Word Will Start It: Call For Scores

Béal have issued a call for scores of text-based pieces that respond to the work of composer Robert Ashley for this year's Béal Festival.

Béal is a music company established two years ago whose mission is to provide a platform for the exploration of all the ways in which text and music meet. With singer Elizabeth Hilliard and pianist David Bremner at its core, the group put on regular performances of new music, bringing together poetry and music in intimate concerts as part of their biennial Béal Festival. They also run The Open Rehearsals, performances in which musicians and theatre artists explore musical theatre improvisation.

This year, Béal have issued a call for scores for the Festival of works that explore text and music, and specifically respond to the works of their featured composer, Robert Ashley. Ashley is an American composer, best known for his operatic and theatre works as well as his early and innovative use of electronics within music. Submissions can be of works already written, or can be proposals of new works, but the focus of the work must be on the voice, with or without electronics.. Other instruments are also a possibility. The deadline for the call is 15 August 2012.
