Whirligig, one of a series of similar events organised by the Improvised Music Company, will feature two groups on Thursday, 29 March, at the Workman’s Club, Dublin. The saxophonist Tim Berne’s latest group, Snake Oil, will perform first, followed by the Thing, featuring Swedish saxophonist Mats Gustaffson, the Norwegian bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten and his compatriot drummer Paal Nilssen-Love.

Snake Oil, with Berne playing saxophone, Oscar Noriega on clarinet, Matt Mitchell on piano and Ches Smith on drums, perform a combination of through-composed and improvised material, with a debut release now out on the ECM label. The Thing are known for cover versions of songs by sources as diverse as PJ Harvey, Don Cherry, the White Stripes and Ornette Coleman.

This will be the seventh Whirligig event in the series. Read our review of an earlier event featuring Francesco Turrisi, Shane Latimer, Gerry O’Beirne and Solo Cissokho

The event begins at 8pm with tickets priced at €18.
