3 Saturdays: 3 Kinds of Music

Saturday, 17 November 2018, 11.00am

Back by popular demand, the Galway Music Residency presents the autumn 2018 series of 3 Saturdays: 3 Kinds of Music. This unique set of concerts will feature the Galway ConTempo Quartet and some of Ireland’s best emerging and established musicians over three dates. On 17th and 24th November, the 15th of December at 11am in the surrounds of The Mick Lally Theatre, ConTempo Quartet will be joined by a number of special guests. With a tasting menu of classical, contemporary and Irish traditional music, this series is set to captivate and delight listeners of all ages.

3 Saturdays: 3 Kinds of Music kicks off on November 17th with an eclectic programme of folk, jazz and classical music. Floriane Blanckes, who will begin the morning on harp with vocals, has a musical background that is as varied as 3 Saturdays: 3 Kinds of Music itself, having studied classical, jazz and world music before moving to Ireland to pursue a full-time career in traditional music in 2006. Matt Jacobson, Colm O Hara, Derek Whyte, and Matthew Berrill are four must-see young performers on today’s Irish jazz scene. The quartet will take to the stage on drums, trombone, bass and saxophone/clarinet respectively with a selection of original contemporary Jazz compositions. ConTempo will close the event with excerpts from Haydn’s String Quartet op 20 no 4, tying the morning together with elements of dance and folk.

On November 24th another veritable collection of musicians will take the audience on a stimulating aural discovery through different musical traditions. Galway native Niamh Regan has a classic folk sound and her array of original songs is sure to delight. Acclaimed musicians Aengus Hackett (guitar) and Sean Maynard Smith (bass) will perform original jazz pieces with a distinctly modern twist.
The third and final concert in the series on December 15th will celebrate the countdown to Christmas with some seasonal airs and festive favourites from Mary McPartlan, Paul McClure and ConTempo Quartet.

This autumn 2018 series of 3 Saturdays: 3 Kinds of Music is very kindly sponsored by LK Shields Solicitors.
