CROSSINGS marks new departure for The Vanbrugh Quartet

The Vanbrugh Quartet is pleased to present CROSSINGS, a suite of collaborations with contemporary composers and traditional performers that which will be performed at the Ionad Culturtha at 8pm 22nd May 2015.  With the performance of CROSSINGS, Ireland’s leading string quartet The Vanbrugh Quartet, will demonstrate their virtuosity and versatility with compositions by Sean Doherty, Dave Flynn and Linda Buckley. Niall Vallely will perform a new composition of his with the Quartet, entitled ‘throughother’ , while Iarla O’Lionard will join them to perform works composed by Linda Buckley.  CROSSINGS signifies a new chapter for the Vanbrugh Quartet as they take up their roles as Artists in Residence at University College of Cork after leaving the RTE stable of orchestras last year. Now in their 30th year, these long time Cork residents’ new collaborations highlight their support and commitment to inspired musical performance by future generations of musicians and composers in Ireland.

The concert at Ionad Culturtha (8.30pm 22nd May 2015) includes performances by Niall Vallely and Iarla Ó Lionáird and compositions by the following:

Sean Doherty:  String Quartet No. 3 Subtitle: ‘The Devil’s Dream’.

Niall Vallely:  throughother (for quartet, concertina, uilleann pipes, fiddle and flute)*

Dave Flynn:  The Cranning (for quartet)

Linda Buckley:  ó íochtar mara – from ocean’s floor (composed for and sung by Iarla O’Lionard ). This new work is a song-cycle based upon Gaelic love poetry of love and loss, some dating back to the seventh century.
