IMC celebrates the work of one of the champions of Irish Jazz, Ronan Guilfoyle, in his 60th year with a series of special concerts at Arthur’s this May 9th and 10th. Musician, composer and educator, Guilfoyle observes this milestone by gathering a cornucopia of Irish and International talent for 4 very distinct sets of music penned, arranged or orchestrated by Guilfoyle.

Things We Like - The Music of Jack Bruce

John Symon Asher "Jack" Bruce was a Scottish musician, singer and songwriter known primarily for his contributions to the British supergroup Cream. Guilfoyle credits Bruce as “probably the reason why I play the bass.” Stating that “Although I was raised on jazz at home, and spent my musical life in jazz, it was hearing Bruce’s great bass lines with Cream that first made me think of how much I liked that sound, and how this could be something I’d like to check out for myself.”

Having met him and admired his musicianship and character for many years, after Bruce passed away in 2014, Guilfoyle embarked on a project based on his music, thoroughly enjoying going through his enormous songbook, picking tunes and finding a way to do them that is both respectful to the songs while allowing for a personal response. Joining Ronan onstage for this concert are Margot Daly, Lars Moeller, Joe O'Callaghan, Izumi Kimura and Brendan Doherty - five musicians with the incredible range of skills necessary to do justice to one of the great musicians of the 20th Century.

'If, like me, you have been playing professionally for nearly 40 years, it's good from time time, to take stock and celebrate the journey so far. I have asked some of my best friends and colleagues in music to join me in a celebration, both of my 60th birthday, and in music itself - especially jazz music. I'm very happy to be doing this on the 9th and 10th of May in Arthur's, by celebrating my 60th birthday along with 17 of my closest colleagues. In choosing the music for this celebration I wanted to include players and projects with whom I have a long track record and I am delighted to have such a stellar cast with me over the two nights.' - Ronan Guilfoyle
