The Paul Dunlea Big Band - Guinness Jazz Festival, Cork

Sunday, 26 October 2014, 2.45pm

Over the last few years, trombonist Paul Dunlea has established himself as one of Ireland’s leading jazz musicians. Christened “the Fred Wesley of Ireland” by Dan Bilawsky of All About Jazz, he is a prominent member of various Irish horn sections, notably those of the Dublin City Jazz Orchestra and Hothouse Bigband.

In 2011 Paul formed his own ensemble, The Paul Dunlea Group, as a creative outlet for his own compositions. The group released their debut album ‘bi-polAr’ to critical acclaim in 2012. The album reached No. 1 in the iTunes Jazz Charts and received much airplay throughout Ireland and the UK, quite an impressive achievement for a new artist and a debut album.

This Guinness Jazz Festival weekend, The Paul Dunlea Big Band, a 17-piece ensemble made up of Ireland’s most renowned jazz musicians, is set to perform a repertoire of original compositions and arrangements written by Paul. The gig takes place on Sunday the 26th of October at 2.45pm in the Curtis Auditorium of The Cork School of Music.  General entry is priced at €10, concession priced at €7.

“My favourite album of the month -  Not only does this album encapsulate the whole gamut of popular modern Jazz, it does so with style without compromising real artistic endeavour “… (bi-Polar), Mick Simms, Jazz Reviewer, Radio Cardiff

“…a thoughtful and sensitive composer, with a gift for blending instruments to paint pictures in sound”…… Irish Independent
