Ioana Petcu-Colan will perform Johann Sebastian Bach’s sublime Partita in D minor for solo violin in the intimate surroundings of the Little Museum of Dublin’s gallery space.

The second in Bach’s landmark set of six sonatas and partitas for unaccompanied violin, the Partita in D minor is well known for its final movement – a Chaconne of remarkable scale, technical virtuosity and emotional weight. The work as a whole is both highly seductive in its surface and rigorously controlled in its larger shapes. It is music of both heart and head.

For this performance Ergodos have commissioned four short interludes from Irish composers Simon O’Connor, Andrew Hamilton, Benedict Schlepper-Connolly and Garrett Sholdice. Each interlude will be presented between two of the Partita’s five movements. Like mirrors, these pieces will catch reflections of the Bach – sometimes distorted, sometimes fleeting…

An Irish violinist of Romanian origin, Ioana Petcu-Colan is one of Ireland’s finest musicians. Ioana’s solo appearances with orchestra have featured Khachaturian, Shostakovitch, Bruch, Beethoven, Mozart, Prokofiev and Bach concertos. A keen chamber musician, Ioana is former first violin and founder member of the Callino Quartet with whom she enjoyed a full and varied performing career including concert tours, festival appearances and recordings. In duo partnership she has performed the complete Beethoven piano and violin sonata cycle. She is currently a member of Ensemble Avalon and leader of the Ulster Orchestra.

The 8pm performance will be preceded by a wine reception and tour of the museum, beginning at 7pm. Ioana Petcu-Colan’s performance will be introduced by Bernard Clarke of RTÉ lyric fm’s NOVA.

The Little Museum of Dublin is on the first floor of 15 St Stephen’s Green, a beautiful Georgian house near the corner of Dawson Street, on the north side of the Green. A people’s museum that tells the story of the modern city, every item has been donated by members of the public.

Seating for this event is highly limited. Advance booking is recommended.
