In celebration of the centenary of Brian Boydell’s birth, DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama presents ‘Confrontations in a Cathedral’, a concert in Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin on Saturday 25th March 2017 at 8pm. Featuring the DIT Brass Ensemble, DIT Percussion Ensemble, DIT Symphony Orchestraand DIT Choral Society, and soloists, ‘Confrontations in a Cathedral’ features music by Brian Boydell, David Bremner, Francis Poulenc and Anton Bruckner.
Boydell wrote ‘Confrontations in a Cathedral’ in 1986 for organ, harp and percussion to explore the specific acoustical and architectural characteristics of St Patrick’s Cathedral. Inspired by his work, this concert will explore further musical confrontations within the rich sound world of the Cathedral.
David Bremner beautifully blends the worlds of classical and traditional music in his work for organ and uilleann pipes. The organ is centre stage for a performance of Poulenc’s magical Organ Concerto scored for strings and timpani. The DIT Choral Society perform three sacred motets by Bruckner in combination with trombones and organ, and the DIT Brass and Percussion Ensemble revel in the majestic acoustic of this historic Cathedral.
Performing in the concert are:
DIT Brass and Percussion Ensemble, DIT Choral Society, DIT Symphony Orchestra, David Bremner - Organ, David Brophy - Conductor, Robbie Carroll – Organ, Ian Dakin - Conductor, Simon Harden - Organ and Conductor, Denise Kelly McDonnell - Harp, Noel Eccles – Percussion, Mark Redmond - Uilleann Pipes
