PhD Scholarship: Broad Musicals of Lerner and Loewe

PhD Scholarship: Broad Musicals of Lerner and Loewe

Thursday, 15 June 2017, 11.55pm

The Department of Music at the University of Sheffield is delighted to announce a doctoral scholarship, generously funded by The Frederick Loewe Foundation and supervised by Dr Dominic McHugh. The scholarship will contribute to the creation of a new Frederick Loewe Edition, in which the composer’s complete works will eventually be published in scholarly critical editions, with Dr McHugh serving as the General Editor.

The successful applicant will edit a complete musical by Loewe that will be published in the Edition, supported by a thesis. Joining Matthew Malone, the existing holder of a Loewe doctoral scholarship at Sheffield who is currently editing Paint Your Wagon for publication in the Edition, the successful applicant will also join a research team with Dr McHugh that will investigate Loewe’s works through performances, conferences, exhibitions, film screenings and other events as appropriate.

They will prepare a critical edition of a musical (Gigi, Brigadoon or Camelot), including full scholarly apparatus, which will form a portion of their PhD submission. They will also prepare a thesis on some aspect of the work or a related theme, which might include aspects of composition, source studies, performance or reception.
