The Nordanians

The Nordanians

Friday, 6 April 2018, 8.00pm

IMC are "Going Dutch" again this year following up the ground-breaking ICP Orchestra Irish tour last November with something equally unique, quirky and musically mesmerising.

The Amsterdam based trio THE NORDANIANS are much more than a mere virtuosic dutch act.

The instrumentation alone; viola, guitar and tabla invites its own intriguing story. This is band who deftly defy genre labels because they sit at the intersections of jazz, chamber, and Indian classical music, driven by a hyper-syncopated funk aesthetic that elevates this trio above the pale.

Featuring Oene van Geel on viola (winner of the prestigious Dutch 'Boy Edgar Prize') who last visited these shores with his Zapp String Quartet for the 2009 edition of our 12 Points Festival, Mark Tuinstra on guitar and Niti Ranjan Biswas on tabla from India - widely regarded as one of the best players in Europe, this band have built a rocking live reputation.

Together, these three musical omnivores bring all of their arsenal to bear, mixing traditional Indian raga's with funk, jazz and chamber music while creating an intimate atmosphere in which they collectively improvise and test each others boundaries.

They have been suitably lauded in their homeland. Leading Dutch jazz publication Jazzism writes: “Each piece is unique and original, the whole musical world passes by. This should be compulsory for every music lover" while JazzFlits accurately sums up, "Ragas, funk, chamber music and jazz. The combination is totally unique!".

Their latest release ‘Dr Mysore’ features Grammy nominated pianist John Beasley, Maarten Ornstein on bass clarinet and bayanplayer Oleg Fateev.

Expect fireworks, deft u-turns, cinematic tearjerkers and some solid beats from this explosive live trio.

This concert is supported by the Dutch Performing Arts 'Going Dutch' programme in partnership with the Jazz Promotion Network (JPN) UK & Ireland.
