The Elixir of Love ( L’elisir d’amore) Donizetti A real tour de force IRISH TIMES Famous for its spellbinding music and sublime arias, especially Una furtive lagrima, Donizett’s ever-popular romantic comedy The Elixir of Love has it all, from unrequited love, to devious deception and thwarted passion.Innovative director Oliver Mears (NI Opera) updates the action, transferring it to a university campus, where Adina is a lecturer and Nemorino a nerdy student. Desperately in love with the beautiful but unattainable Adina, Nemorino is conned by fraudster Dr Dulcamara to buy some fake love potion, pledging himself to the army in order to pay for it.Sung in English The Elixir of Love features a powerful cast led by Anthony Flaum as Nemorino and Anna Patalong as Adina (who recently made her Royal Opera House Covent Garden debut) and Irish Soprano Sarah Reddin making her OTC debut, “who sparkles as the coquettish Giannetta” (Irish Times). Other cast include OTC stalwart John Molloy (Trinity Moses, Mahagonny and Zuniga, Carmen ) as the crafty Dulcamara and James McOran Campbell as Belcore the lusty army recruitment officer. OTC Artistic Director Fergus Sheil conducts the 12-member orchestra and professional chorus. Design is by Annemarie Woods, with costumes by Ilona Karas and lighting by Kevin Treacy. The Elixir of Love is a co-production with NI Opera and is nominated in the Best Opera category in the Irish Times Theatre Awards.
Mears’s fast moving Inventive and sensitive staging was full of good things. This was among the most unaffectedly heart warming and well thought out Elisirs you could hope for. OPERA NOW
