Amir Tafreshipour, Judith Ring and Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh at Valentia Island Chamber Music Festival

5th festival programmed by pianist Mary Dullea takes place on 16–19 August on the County Kerry island.

The 5th Chamber Music on Valentia festival will take place from Thursday 16 to Sunday 19 August.

Programmed by pianist Mary Dullea of the Fidelio Trio, the event extends to four days this year and will have two composers in residence: Amir Tafreshipour and Judith Ring.

Amir Tafreshipour is a leading Iranian composer whose work has been recorded by the English Chamber Orchestra and Crash Ensemble. On 18 August, the festival will present the Irish premiere of his Shabahang (nocturne).

Irish composer Judith Ring, who recently released her first album of songs, Ring Lieder (read our review here), will give the world premiere of her work for solo piano, Dusting the Moth, as well as a performance for voice and electronics at the Valentia Island Farmhouse Dairy.

Other highlights include a solo performance by Caoimhín Ó Roghallaigh on Sunday 19 August, a performance of the Sonata for Violin and Piano by E.J. Moeran (who lived on Valentia), works by Ramaeu, Muffat, Bach and Rebel performed by Fishamble Sinfonia, Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht for String Sextet, and a sound installation by Seán Ó Dálaigh.

Chamber musicians include Darragh Morgan (violin), Siripong Albert Tiptan (violin), Mike Kelley (viola), Peter Martens (cello), David Edmonds (cello) and Mary Dullea (piano). New Irish vocal group M’ANAM will perform on the final night of the festival.
