Dates Announced for RTÉ Radio 1 Folk Awards

Awards will take place on 27 February 2024; submissions are now open.

RTÉ has announced that the sixth Radio 1 Folk Awards will take place on 27 February 2024 in Vicar Street in Dublin. The date marks a departure from the awards’ usual event in November.

Seven awards, decided by a voting jury, will be made on the night, including Best Original Folk Track, Best Traditional Folk Track, Best Folk Singer, Best Emerging Folk Artist, Best Folk Instrumentalist, Best Folk Group and Best Folk Album. The qualifying period for the awards is 13 September 2022 to 12 November 2023 – a period of 14 months. Submissions for consideration from musicians, labels, promoters and members of the public can be sent to folkawards [at] rte.ie.

There will also be a Hall of Fame Award and a Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the Folk Awards Committee.

Commenting on the awards, Peter Woods, Head of RTÉ Radio 1, said:

Music is central to what RTÉ Radio 1 does and folk and traditional music are integral to that. We take pride in this and pride too in the Folk Awards in particular, which is a central part of the music calendar and a great recognition of the talent produced by this country and how it marks our culture.

This new February date allows the awards to better reflect the full previous calendar year of music. The event will be broadcast live on RTÉ Radio 1 and on the RTÉ Radio app, and a highlights programme will be broadcast late on RTÉ television.
