The composer Linda Buckley has been announced as the RTÉ Lyric FM Composer-in-Residence for the 2011/2012 season. Buckley will be the second composer to fill the role, taking over from Elaine Agnew, who held the position from 2008 to 2010.

Aodán Ó Dubhghaill, Head of RTÉ Lyric FM, said that the appointment was an exciting initiative in the creation of new music. ‘Linda’s compositional talent doesn’t so much span as ignore in a very informed way the boundaries between the live acoustic sound of an orchestra and electronics,’ he said.

Based in Dublin, but originally from Kinsale, County Cork, Buckley will write four new works as part of the residency. These will include a piece for the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, a new Christmas carol and an arrangement of the station’s jingle. Buckley will also engage in various educational activities, such as visiting schools and mentoring two young composers in writing for the RTÉ Concert Orchestra. She will also broadcast on RTÉ Lyric FM and write a blog account of her residency.
