The School of Music at University College Dublin is pleased to offer a fully funded four-year PhD studentship in music, starting this September 1st 2023. The position is co-funded by Science Foundation Ireland and the Irish Research Council as part of a project entitled Improvising Across Boundaries: Voicing the experience of women and gender-minority improvising musicians.

The successful applicant will be involved in a collaborative four-year project, working closely with improvising musicians based on the island of Ireland, the Improvised Music Company (IMC), and a wider research team. One of the main planned outputs for the doctoral researcher is a 40-minute documentary, which should be a central strand in the doctoral work, on both a methodological and theoretical level. Whilst previous experience of producing documentary or video outputs would be welcomed, an interest in multimedia research and/or experience of DIY approaches to the sharing of research or artistic work would be sufficient as training and expert support will be provided as part of the PhD. This collaborative project will take a queer, feminist, and co-produced approach to engaging with key societal and theoretical issues. Evidence of critical engagements with or lived experience of intersectional gender politics in a relevant setting is therefore essential. We particularly welcome applications by people from backgrounds underrepresented in academia, music-related studies, and the music and media industries.

The studentship will last four years and will include:
a full fee waiver;
a tax-free stipend of €19,000 per annum;
a range of fully funded professional development opportunities (to include international academic and Irish music industry conference attendance and festival fieldwork in Ireland).
