The track or piece of music I enjoyed most:

Princess Royal

Why I gave the above rating:

The duet of fiddle-player Frankie Gavin and bouzouki player Alec Finn was one of the great traditional music ensembles of our time. They began together as members of De Dannan, and, in 1977, recorded a classic duet album together on the Shanachie label. 41 years later, and a month before Finn died in November 2018, they released a second. In between, De Dannan has become on of the most important Irish traditional music bands and Gavin's work as a soloist was equally influential.

Traditional Irish Music on Fiddle and Bouzouki Volume II has thirteen short tracks, most just around two minutes. Gavin is completely solo on three, and the duet are also joined by Brian Bourke on bodhrán. Gavin's playing on this album is perhaps even more intricate than it was first time around, in particular on the solo 'The Whistling Postman'.

When Finn and Gavin two play together, however, it is extraordinary how close it is to the sound all those decades ago, Gavin's driving fiddle and Finn's magical harmonic weave in the background. The Carolan tune 'Princess Royal' demonstrates that best. 'The Donegal Pidgeon' and 'Sailor on the Rock' are also great examples of the instinctive musical relationship between the two. A valuable record of a rare musical partnership.
