The Long Game (Liam Noble, Tom Herbert & Will Glaser) @ Brilliant Corners Jazz Festival
For more than three decades, Liam Noble has been a key figure on the vibrant British Jazz scene, both as a sideman and leader.
Playing piano from an early age, Noble studied music at Oxford University and undertook a postgraduate course at the Guildhall, London. Soon thereafter, Noble joined Stan Sulzmann, playing in the latter’s duo and in his two-piano quartet alongside John Taylor. Subsequently, he played in bands led by Harry Beckett, John Stevens, Anita Wardell and Tim Whitehead. He also recorded and toured with legendary New York musician Moondog and worked with masters of the UK jazz scene including Kenny Wheeler and Lol Coxhill. Noble attracted critical attention with his debut solo work ‘Close Your Eyes’, featuring free improvisations as well as his own compositions.
His recent album, ‘The Long Game’, explores exciting new territories in his musical world.
It is a marriage of opposites; the groove is funky yet abstract, improvisations move from tranquil to fierce, it is dense in texture but with a wonderful translucency. Most of all this is music of patience and space, perfectly reflecting the beauty of waiting for the right moment. It is music to be savoured.
For Brilliant Corners, Liam will be joined by two of the foremost players in the UK – Tom Herbert (Polar Bear/The Invisible) and Will Glaser (Dinosaur/Soweto Kinch).
