When you hear the word 'composer', what are the meanings and associations that come up for you? How can we decide on a one size fits all description for an artistic profession? CMC's March Sparky Conversation is led by composer John Godfrey with contributions from Ellen King and Danny McCarthy. All welcome - bring your questions, perspective and experience!

John Godfrey has been a composer, a performer, and a promoter of contemporary art music for more than 30 years. In 1989, he co-founded the group Icebreaker in the UK; in 1997, he became a founding member of Ireland’s Crash Ensemble. In 2008, he established Quiet Music Ensemble, a group dedicated to experimental and improvised music. Godfrey has performed in Europe, USA, Australia and Japan, has been broadcast worldwide and has released many CDs. He is a Senior Lecturer at University College Cork (Ireland), where he specialises in Experimental sonic arts, composition and improvisation.

Ellen King is an Irish multidisciplinary composer, producer and DJ based in Berlin, Germany. Writing and performing music under her own name and ‘ELLLL’ moniker, Ellen has carved out a distinctive voice in both contemporary and club-music contexts, with compositions etched by abstract experimentalism, fragmented rhythms and bass-heavy club.

Danny McCarthy studied at the National College of Art and Design. He has pioneered both performance art and sound art in Ireland and he continues to be a leading exponent exhibiting and performing both in Ireland and abroad.
