BEETHOVEN Coriolan Overture / 8’
BRAHMS Concerto for Violin and Cello in A minor / 32’
BRAHMS Symphony No. 2 in D / 40’
With the music of Johannes Brahms the nineteenth-century symphony reached its apex, and gave the momentum to the new music of the twentieth. Brahms was a tortured genius who delayed for many years before daring to write a symphony in the footsteps of Beethoven. Of his four symphonies, the second exhibits the perils and triumphs of Brahms’s musical vision and craftsmanship. His concerto for violin and cello is another controversial work. This performance features two of the most outstanding young musicians on the international stage, Itamar Zorman and Leonard Elschenbroich, while Nathalie Stutzmann makes a welcome return to the podium.
