Alternating Current 2023
Alternating Current returns this October 27 & 28. This year we’ve organised the festival around the theme of “meitheal” an Irish word denoting a historical practice of community labour in the production of common goods. For AC23 we want to explore the production of a sonic commons - ways in which the production of and experience of sounds is always a collaborative process - connecting us into a network of historical and contemporary movements, technologies and people.
We want to consider how we create work together in times of precarity, how we organise ourselves to create cultural spaces and how when we make and listen to music together we are always living-in-common with others. This year we want to open up links with new organisations, to spark new collaborations and create new forms of community, while continuing with our vision of making Alternating Current a celebration of sonic cultures, radio art and contemporary Irish music.
We’ve invited Dublin Art and Technology Association to curate a daytime programme of events in The Gallery. DATA will explore communal art making with a series of workshops and screenings. As well as this, we wanted to link up with four different internet radio stations that share a similar ethos to ddr. We have commissioned a new collaborative radio work between four different radio stations; Radio Alhara in Palestine, Radio Cashmere in Germany, Radio Kapital in Poland, and ourselves.
This year the festival has specially commissioned artists at the cutting edge of sonic practice to make work for the festival and as ever we are excited to have the privilege of presenting this work over the weekend.
