Clive Carroll plays the music of John Renbourn - with special guest Dariush Kanani
This very special one-off tour celebrates the release of Clive Carroll’s brand new double-album, ‘The Abbot’, which features the music of acoustic guitar legend and founding member of Pentangle, John Renbourn (1944-2015).

Renbourn’s flair for early music, blues, jazz, and traditional melodies saw him recognized as a pioneer of the 1960s “folk baroque” movement. With Renbourn’s death in 2015 came Carroll’s realisation that the vast majority of his musical output has never been performed live. Though happily preserved on Renbourn’s many recordings, his groundbreaking compositions beckon for rediscovery. One of the most visionary, charismatic, and innovative musicians of his generation, Renbourn was always tinkering with his compositions and arrangements, his questing musical pursuit gleefully never-ending. In this spirit, Carroll has taken favourites from Renbourn’s repertoire and infused them with his own formidable musical voice.

Clive Carroll’s ‘The John Renbourn Project’ is a musical celebration of Renbourn’s music and Carroll’s memories and time with him. The two first met in the late 1990s in Manningtree, Essex, when Renbourn arrived to perform at The Red Lion pub only to find himself in the thrall of then-conservatory-student Carroll, who was opening for him. This meeting resulted in an enduring friendship and musical partnership. Renbourn subsequently took Carroll on the road with him, to North America and across Europe, and gave him much encouragement as he embarked on his own solo career.

In 2021, Total Guitar Magazine described Clive Carroll as, “…arguably the most accomplished fingerstylist in the world today…”. ‘The John Renbourn Project’ sees him joined by special guest Dariush Kanani on acoustic guitar as he mines Renbourn’s treasure trove of repertoire, performing material from his solo career and his duo with Bert Jansch. Listeners will be treated to performances of music from Renbourn’s now-classic albums—‘Another Monday’, ‘Sir John Alot of Merrie Englandes Musyk Thyng and Ye Grene Knyghte’, ‘The Lady and The Unicorn’, ‘The Hermit’, ‘The Black Balloon’, ‘Traveller’s Prayer’, ‘Bert and John’, and more.
