NYJO (National Youth Jazz Orchestra) has diversified its output in recent years to engage with more emerging professional musicians and nurture multiple ensembles ranging from trios to big bands. The organisation delivers successful nationwide learning programmes for teenagers and community engagement at its Woolwich location. The Ensembles Manager acts as the primary point of liaison between NYJO’s emerging professional musicians (aged 18-25) and its management. The Ensembles Manager is responsible for nurturing young musicians and delivering high-quality, accessible, professional development opportunities. The successful candidate should have a solid understanding of big band and small ensemble jazz, along with a minimum of five years of experience in arts administration, preferably in band or orchestra management.

The candidate should have excellent communication skills and the ability to engage with a wide range of people with diverse skill sets and needs, especially young artists. They should have experience fixing personnel for bands or orchestras and working with sound technicians and venue technical departments. The candidate should possess excellent organisational skills and be able to work closely with internal and external stakeholders, building strong relationships with them. Additionally, the candidate should be committed to inclusion and able to devise effective systems and strategies that underpin strong working relationships and a respectful, safe environment for all beneficiaries.

The Ensembles Manager should have financial literacy and experience working with Microsoft Office suite, particularly Outlook and Excel, and Xero accounting software. They should also possess meticulous attention to detail and be able to work under tight deadlines. The candidate should have a flexible, adaptable, welcoming, and enthusiastic approach to their work, along with a full, clean driving licence. First Aid and Mental Health First Aid qualifications would be useful, but training can be provided. Due to the project delivery central to this full-time role, a great deal of flexibility will be required in the post holder’s working hours. The candidate can discuss their preferred working hours/days and hybrid working during the interview.
