Kirkos Presents ж Josh Spear

Friday, 6 December 2019, 8.45pm

Kirkos are delighted to announce that Friday December 6th will now be a double bill headliner as we present an incredibly special solo set from composer-performer Josh Spear in the Oonagh Young Gallery. The performance will take place following a drinks reception after the Irish premiere of composer Yannis Kyriakides’ contemporary opera The Buffer Zone - venues less than 1 minute from each other! All tickets to The Buffer Zone (from Sat & Sun too) are valid for entry to Spear’s performance - what a treat of a Friday!

“mysterious..theatrical..everyday oddness”...
Spear is a proud member of experimental composer-performer group Bastard Assignments (of which the above quote from Stephen Chase sums up quite accurately!). The composer collective are based in London and are devoted to contemporary & experimental music. With his strong interest in the extremes of lip synching, this is something Spear explores to a virtuosic level with the group. Known to push the limits of experimental music, a compelling and unexpected performance is in store.

The solo set will include 2 intimate, intricate & vibrant works:
CONSTANZE
A new commission from American composer/choreographer/theatre artist John Moran, Constanze is an intimate theatrical portrait of John’s artist friend Constanze and her children in Dresden. While known as a composer of unconventional opera, in recent times Moran has worked on a more intimate scale, with dancers who lip-sync while moving to complex, rapid scores.
Quote from Frieze.com on Spear:
“[Spear] likes this guy John Moran, who works with broken loops of banal bits of audio, like people at a bar, ordering drinks. It’s kind of virtuosic but totally boring as well. He’s interested in that stuff, and also the slightly kind of camp drag thing.”

FAKE
Set as a challenge for himself, FAKE is a new mime piece. Spear wanted to try to tell the story of the moon landing (1969) through the soundtrack to Psycho (1960) by Bernard Herrman, whilst also recontextualising the soundtrack to Psycho through the timeline and events of the moon landing.

Following an opera showcasing alienation, isolation & the effects of war, the audience can expect Spear’s set to be similarly intimate and captivating, yet perhaps lighter in tone!
