London Improvisers Orchestra @ 25
The London Improvisers Orchestra (LIO) will mark 25 years of dedication to large ensemble conducted improvisation, also known as ‘Conduction’, and free improvisation with a celebratory concert at Cafe Oto on 4th August 2023, 7.30 pm. The orchestra will offer a performance featuring both seasoned and newer members, including founding members Steve Beresford, Orphy Robinson and John Bisset, as well as experienced members such as Maggie Nicols, Sue Ferrar, and Ashley Wales, and recent additions like Charlotte Keefe, Faradena Afifi, and Julian Woods.
The LIO was established in 1998 following the 1997 touring group of American improviser Butch Morris, known as the original inventor of Conduction. Since its inception, the orchestra has witnessed hundreds of members, including prominent names such as Evan Parker, Pat Thomas, Byron Wallen, John Edwards, Lol Coxhill, Caroline Kraabel, and Mark Sanders. Founding member Steve Beresford currently leads the group.
Orphy Robinson, an award-winning multi-instrumentalist, is one of the few UK musicians to be signed to the notable USA Jazz label “Blue Note”. With a career spanning 40 years, Robinson has worked with a variety of acclaimed artists across multiple genres.
Maggie Nicols, a free improvisation vocalist, joined London’s renowned Spontaneous Music Ensemble in 1968. Nicols continues to perform and record work in music and theatre, collaborating with numerous artists, and undertaking solo projects.
