Spotlight Chamber Music Series I – Bangers and Crash Percussion Duo

Alex Petcu – percussion
Caitríona Frost – percussion

Programme includes:

Ivan Trevino: 2+1 for Marimba Duo
Emmanuel Sejourne: Losa for Vibraphone and Marimba Duo
Nils Rohwer: Duet Colours for Vibraphone and Marimba Duo
Gene Koshinski: And So The Wind Blew… for Percussion Duo

This concert will be presented by two Corkonians of inimitable artistry – Caitríona Frost and Alex Petcu of the Bangers and Crash Percussion Duo – who will perform an eclectic range of music featuring a wide variety of styles, sounds, textures and instrumentation. It is the first of four concerts in the Spotlight Chamber Music Series, which is curated by Aoife Burke and is based on the principle of bringing together some of Ireland’s most dynamic and distinguished musicians to play with one another in small ensembles.Trevino’s work 2+1 is, in the words of the composer, “a challenging experience for the performers”, written for two percussionists playing on one marimba, using four mallets each. Caitríona and Alex will have to manoeuvre around the marimba without getting in each other’s way, and one of them will have to perform on the opposite side of the instrument. Sejourne’s Losa is inspired by the rhythms of Spanish Flamenco music and Rohwer’s Duet Colours is equally evocative and atmospheric. Koshinki’s And So the Wind Blew… is a work which focuses on the sounds of nature, most specifically wind, but also water and other elements. It is written for tuned wind chimes, vibraphone, a concert bass drum, crotales, tuned rice bowls, two piccolo woodblocks and maracas, among other instruments!
