HOTHOUSE, a new production by MALAPROP, is scheduled for presentation at the Project Arts Centre’s Space Upstairs from 9th to 16th September.

The narrative of the play is spread across three distinct time frames. In 1969, a character named Ruth exhibits an aversion to lettuce-filled sandwiches. Fast forward to current times, Ali embarks on a cruise, seemingly bidding farewell to ice. A century into the future, a parent offers reassurance to their offspring, even amidst evident uncertainties.

This work touches upon various subjects, including birds, parenthood, love, legacy, and the complexities of desiring change. It’s noteworthy that the play was initially commissioned by THISISPOPBABY for their ‘Where We Live’ series. Furthermore, its development has been backed by the Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon. MALAPROP’s association with the Project Arts Centre as Project Artists, combined with support from field:arts, has also contributed to the realisation of this play.

Potential audience members should be aware that the performance includes instances of loud noise, strobe lights, haze, and also references sensitive topics such as domestic violence and suicide.

HOTHOUSE boasts a rich ensemble both on and off stage. The play has been penned down by Carys D. Coburn in collaboration with MALAPROP. Claire O’Reilly helms the direction, while the cast comprises Peter Corboy, Thommas Kane Byrne, Bláithín Mac Gabhann, Maeve O’Mahony, and Ebby O’Toole Acheampong. Other contributors to the production include Anna Clock (Musical Direction), John Gunning (Lighting Designer), and Deirdre Griffin (Choreographer).

The preview is slated for 9th September at 18:15, with tickets priced at €14. Regular performances run from 12th to 16th September, with ticket prices varying between €18 and €16. The play runs for a duration of 90 minutes. On 16th September, there will be an ISL interpreted performance at 13:00.

The promotional images for HOTHOUSE have been captured by Pato Cassinoni, with art direction overseen by Molly O’Cathain.
