The Going Coastal festival, a celebration of original music, is set to feature artist Maija Sofia at The Mick Lally Theatre in Galway on November 17th at 8 pm. The event, presented by The Black Gate, will open its doors at 7:30 pm, with tickets priced at €15.

Maija Sofia, a Galway-based songwriter, is known for her unique approach to music. Growing up in rural Galway, her early life contributed to her deep-rooted storytelling skills. Sofia’s music style is described as a blend of various elements, combining the intimate and the overwhelming into her compositions. She is recognized for writing most of her music at night, which reflects in the nocturnal and introspective themes of her lyrics.

Her sound, often linked with the dark folkloric edge and the wistful romance of new wave pop, is characterized by a preference for analogue instrumentation and off-kilter arrangements. Sofia’s musical influences are said to include Aldous Harding, Kate Bush, and the experimental folk sounds of Shirley & Dolly Collins.

The Going Coastal festival, which showcases contemporary original music, aims to highlight young, emerging, and established musical talents from the western edge of Ireland. The festival takes place across various venues in Galway City, offering a platform for artists to present their work to a wider audience.
